We love Roşia Montană -

Located in a green valley in the Carpathians, Transylvania region, the village tells (as the oldest documented mining settlement in Romania) an over 2000 years history. And the history continues to be written today. Not only beauty and age characterizes this place – but it’s one big treasure: Europe’s largest gold reserve.

The Transylvanian village is placed in an incredibly valuable gold mining area and therefore the right for exploitation of the gold reserve of Rosia was concessioned by Rosia Montana Gold Corporation (RMGC) since 1997. RMGC represents a joint venture between the Canadian mining company Gabriel Resources as the major share holder (80%) and the Romanian state (20%). The plan of the company is the destruction of 4 mountains and a large part of the village in order to establish a cyanide lake & mining waste deposits – with massive and not foreseeable consequences for nature and people.

The Romanian state claims that this project – at a time of global economic crisis - will bring thousands of jobs and immediate gains of up to 4 billion U.S. dollars.

On the other hand, a part of the local community opposes this project for over 10 years – in the firm belief that the true treasure of the region is not its gold.

In the year of 2000 about 40 Romanian NGOs gathered for the first time in Rosia Montana and issued a joint statement against the proposed project.

This was the birth of the “Save Rosia Montana” campaign – today the strongest civic protest movement in Romania. This opposition is based on diverse cultural, social, environmental and economic arguments.

The opponents believe that instead of the destructive gold mining project with short-term gains, sustainable development through tourism and organic farming is the future of the region.

Holnap este, azaz július 30-án két utazó, Louisa Hoppe and Tica Darie történetével ismerkedhettek meg, akik Koppenhágából kerekeztek el Romániába, méghozzá természetvédelmi célokból; egy hegy, illetve egy régió megvédésének, és az öncélú aranybányászat visszaszorításának érdekében vállalkoztak erre a több mint 2000 kilométeres utazásra. Számunkra is jól ismert a történet egy része, hiszen 2000-ben Magyarország is komoly károkat szenvedett el a Verespatakon zajló tevékenységek folyományaként.  Gyertek el és ismerjétek meg egyrészt az utazás kalandos történetét, másrészt magát a hátteret, hogy miért is fontos az a kezdeményezés, amit ők is és még nagyon sokan képviselnek és támogatnak.

Lesz filmvetítés, prezentáció és természetesen eszmecsere az adott témában.
