2016 is soon over. It was a lively and fascinating year for Szimpla. We tried to gather what happened in the past 365 days, but we soon realized it is impossible to include everything, the year was so eventful. However, we would like to mention a few figures, data and interesting happenings which made our year colourful and Szimpla!
In a hindsight, Szimpla Kert had over one million visitors in 2016, and the number of daytime visitors is increasing. One of our most important goals for 2017 is to make Szimpla interesting for visitors also during the day.
We organized more than 300 concerts and other live music events, 10 bike markets, 4 newly introduced Szimpla Treasures markets and a dog day. In our cellar, 8 Strike Bikes have been assembled, and every purchase supported Budapest Bike Mafia with 10 thousand HUF. The sum goes to families in need. We closed down Kazinczy street three times this year. Over 3 thousand people strolled, played, played music during our street festivals and we collected much more signatures for our petititions. 3300 people have supported that Kazinczy street becomes pedestrian, while our proposal to make a pedestrian crossing on Rákóczi street was supported by 2100 people.
Our website has had over 250 thousand visitors this year as well. More than 4 million people has seen our Facebook page, and more than 80 thousand people like and follow it. The blog of Szimpla is visited by more than 100 people a day, which is approximately 40 thousand a year. On Google, we have been searched almost 2 million times (so far 1.999.404). On Google maps over 5 million people looked up our place, and over 200 thousand have found us by Google navigation. One song was listened to over 7300 times on our Soundcloud channel, and 286 were downloaded. Since its launch, our page was played 22 thousand times, and downloaded 1200 times. This year our YouTube videos were watched for 360 thousand minutes, which was made up by watching over 137 thousand videos. Our most watched video was Góbé’s song Stranger:
In our Common Cauldron programme at the Szimpla Farmers’ Market over 40 NGOs collected over 5 million HUF, and additionally another 300 thousand HUF were raised at the Szimpla Treasures markets, which also went to charity.
We are especially proud that at the 50 farmers’ markets during the year, at the stalls of almost 100 farmers were visited by approximately 140 thousand people (a lot more than in 2015) and purchased from our delicacies.
In the framework of the Kazinczy Living Library we worked with 10 volunteers on several topics to open up the eyes of people and show that dialogue and taking the other person into consideration is a lot more beneficial than rejection.
We organized 10 WineOrgies, 10 Pálinka courses, 8 Coffee courses, and a fascinating farm visit at one of our farmers at the market. We opened two new rooms upstairs, one of them is called the Szimpla Salon, where at the first public event Mátyás Szöllősi’s book Changing currents was launched on September 30th. In 2017, the book Budapest Catalogue will be published on the Book Week in June supported by Szimpla, which will be the summary of the first three years of the portrait series presenting urban faces.
During our 8 Pop Up Tattoo events more than 100 people were tattooed in Szimpla Salon, and next year we would like to spend the majority of the sum from this activity on charity.
Szimpla Design Shop, which operated in Síp street for years now you can find within Szimpla.
Next year, if everything goes well, Kazinczy street will be partly traffic calmed, however we would still like to organize our popular street festivals. We will hold the usual spring festival in 2017 (Day of birds and trees) and the autumn festival (Carfree Children’s Day). In addition, we would like to close down Kazinczy street for our bike days, so prepare to ride once a month!
Another piece of good news: our concert hall will be renovated in January and February; this means we will have fewer programmes during this time, but after March we will organize concerts in a bigger, more beautiful and better equipped concert hall. This year we had 7 live music programmes a week, and we had dedicated stages at three festivals (Babel Sound, Tűfokán, Gyüttment) and we are very proud of our dance house, which is organized every Saturday since May, with the participation of students from the Music Academy, and it is a huge success. In 2017 you can meet the bands in our Lemming programme in the Arts Valley, as we still wish to support and introduce new talents from Hungary.
Szimpla Háztáji, our coffeehouse is three years this year, and it was renovated completely in 2015. It seems you also find our coffeehouse established on the basis of our Farmers’ Market worth visiting, as in 2016 over 1000 pans of treats were baked, which means approximately 20 thousand slices. We used 21600 eggs (60 per day), 14400 kilograms of flour, 500 litres of yoghurt, minimum 50 kilograms of apples per month, and 100 kilograms of chia seeds. We sold approximately 4000 menus. As we found there was a huge demand for farm to table products, we launched our Sunday Farmer’s Breakfast in November, where we have had more, than 200 guests so far enjoying the delicacies of our farmers’ market every Sunday morning.
We have taken an incredible amount of photos and films in Szimpla, and at the end of our summary for the year we would like to recall some memorable moments. We hope we could contribute to your well-being in 2016 as well, and we could make you smile at our concerts, exhibitions, or with a drink, lunch or treat, or a good cup of coffee here in Szimpla. Let’s meet again at 14, Kazinczy street in 2017 as well!
