Szimpla Balaton Camp takes off – interview

There’s less than a week left until Szimpla Balaton Camp is totally ready to start. From 18th July everyone is welcome who loves nomad lifestyle (sleeping in tent, etc.) and sports and of course also loves Balaton and it’s surrounding. Nándor Terék, organizer of the camp, responded to a couple of questions regarding Szimpla Balaton Camp. We hope that all of you get excited by the end of this article and shows up in the Pécsely basin (northern side of Balaton) – truly one of the most beautiful regions of Hungary.

When did the first Szimpla Balaton start and for how long did it last? What was your role in it’s operation?

- It all started early spring, 2010. We set up our first campground at Balatonfűzfő. The location was BS Fűzfő port. There was a Thatcher building later labourers’ club house where we tried to settle the roots of Szimpla. Unfortunately it turned out at the end of our first season that local ventures, the management of the port and local government also were quite adverse. It was clear to us that we need to find a new location. Me, myself worked in multiple positions: besides management I was a repairman, administrator, bartender, I did the cleaning and transportation of stuff we needed.

What will be new or diverse at the new Szimpla Balaton?

- On one hand we moved to a private place and we’ll function as a private club, on the other hand our image is brand new: there will be a row of outdoor activities and sport facilities.

How’s the new camp? What is it special for?

- The location itself is almost a miracle. It is an ancient monument-like presbytery and it’s huge garden. A small river cuts the garden in two, we have a little lake, an old cellar (for vine), green rooftop and panoramic view to Zádor peak. We have a basketball backboard, volleyball net, table tennis, fire place and 2 slacklines: a rope stretched between 2 trees and one can walk on it like a rope-dancer. We have a couple of bikes with which guests can get to Balatonörvényes beach, but it also will be possible to call a taxi van to the beach, or to Balatonfüred (party time), or to Kapolcs where the Festival of arts will take place. Those who seek adrenaline push in the head will be able to go climbing to Dörgicse hills. We also plan to organize our local Olympia – winners get coupons to drink for free at the bar.

How to get there the easiest?

- Evidentially by car. It is 140 km far from Budapest. On speedway M7, than on road 71 until Aszófő, than take the right to Pécsely. By train: you take the train at Déli-pályaudvar (train station), by bus: from Népliget bus station. With both one can get to Balatonfüred and from Balatonfüred bus station bus stop ‘4’ is from where local bus goes to Dörgicse, and another local bus gets to Pécsely – Zádor restaurant.

How can one register to Szimpla Balaton Camp?

- Just drop an email to szimplabalaton@gmail.com, we give a feedback to every registration, than just come. :) This is a must as guest number is limited. Fee is 4000 HUF (approximately 13 EUR) per night. This contains the place for a tent, all sports facilities, usage of bikes and breakfast. Important: bring your tent!

Something else. You conquered the peak of Elbrus with 3 climping mates. Tell us something about such a challenge!

- At the end of June we tried to climb one of the so called Seven Summits. Elbrus is the highest spot of Europe: 5642 meter high and is in the Caucasus. Our mini expedition succeeded, 2 of 4 people got to the peak. Knowing that bad weather was about to arrive soon one of us got to 4100 meter high, I climbed until 4680 meter, and the rest of us conquered the mountain. The trip was fantastic anyways. We don’t only climb for reaching peaks, it is quite OK if one can’t get to the highest.
